Yes. Having a plan does not lock you into using it. Ask for the cash price at the counter and compare it with what your plan would charge. If cash comes in lower, pay that instead. The decision is yours on every prescription, and the better option can flip from one medication to another.
No. On plenty of medications your plan will beat it, especially once your deductible is satisfied. Cash tends to win on older generics and on drugs your plan has left off its list entirely. That is why both numbers get checked rather than assumed, and why the answer is not the same every time.
Tricare is the one insurance plan not accepted. Every other plan is. Tricare members are still welcome to fill prescriptions and pay the cash price, and the same price comparison and generic questions apply. If the cash price on a particular drug is not workable for you, the pharmacist will say so directly rather than filling it first.
Yes. Cash prices track what the medication costs the pharmacy, and that shifts with supply, manufacturer changes, and shortages. A drug that was inexpensive in the spring can climb by the fall, and prices fall as often as they rise. If cost mattered the first time, it is worth asking again at each refill.
Yes. Copays change at the start of a plan year and again whenever a drug moves to a different tier. If yours jumped without explanation, the cash price on that same medication may now be the lower of the two. Checking takes a moment and is worth doing on any refill that suddenly costs more than it used to.
