Medication Made to Fit the Person Taking It
A tablet a toddler spits back out is not a dose. Neither is a capsule someone can no longer swallow, or a strength the manufacturer stopped making. When the commercial version does not fit the patient, the prescription stalls and nobody gets treated.
Compounding is how that gets solved. At our pharmacy in Delaware, Ohio, medication is prepared to the strength, the form, and the ingredient list one specific patient can handle, whether that patient walks in on two legs or four.
Three Things a Compound Can Change
Strength
A dose no manufacturer sells is prepared at the exact amount ordered.
Form
A tablet becomes a liquid, a cream, or whatever the patient can actually take.
Ingredients
A dye, a sugar, or a filler that causes a reaction gets left out.
Larecia Seibert, PharmD, owns this pharmacy and practices at the counter, so the pharmacist behind a compound is the one who answers your questions about it.
Who We Compound For
Children
Doses are scaled to a child's weight and put into a liquid a parent can measure accurately and a child will swallow without a fight.
Animals
Pets rarely fit the doses made for people, and a pill hidden in food only works until they find it. On your veterinarian's order, medication is prepared at the right strength and in a form an animal will actually take.
Digestive conditions
When a gut absorbs poorly or reacts to the fillers packed around a commercial tablet, the same drug can be rebuilt in a form that avoids them.
Hospice and palliative care
As swallowing becomes difficult, comfort medication is prepared in liquid or topical forms a family caregiver can give at home.
Have This Ready When You Call
- The prescriber's name, since a compound is ordered by a doctor or a veterinarian the same as any other medication.
- The form the patient can manage: liquid, topical, or something else.
- Any ingredient that has to come out, such as a dye, a sugar, or lactose.
- A child's age and current weight, or a pet's species and weight, so the dose is scaled to the right number.
- Your insurance card. We take most insurance plans.
Ask a pharmacist whether a compound will work before the prescription is written.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. A compound is a prescription medication, so your doctor, dentist, or nurse practitioner has to order it. Call us first if you want to talk through the options. We can tell you what forms and strengths are realistic, and you can bring that back to your prescriber before the order is written.
That is one of the most common reasons parents come to us. A medication that only exists as a tablet can be prepared as a liquid, and the taste can be adjusted so a child will take the full dose. Bring your child's current weight so the strength is calculated correctly.
It depends on the formula and on whether the ingredients are already on our shelf. It is not a five minute wait like a standard fill. When you bring the prescription in, we tell you the timing for that specific preparation so you can plan the first dose around it.
Yes. Hospice and palliative compounding is one of our regular services, and it usually means turning something a patient can no longer swallow into a liquid or a topical form. Call with the prescriber's order and tell us who is giving the medication, so the directions are written for that caregiver.
We take most insurance plans. Coverage for a specific compound is a separate question, and it varies by plan and by ingredient. We check your benefits before preparing anything and tell you the cash price if the plan will not cover it, so there is no surprise at pickup.
Yes, with a prescription from your veterinarian. Animals often need a strength that does not exist commercially, or a form that is not a pill, so a dose can be prepared as a liquid, a chew, or a topical instead. Bring the vet's order along with your pet's species and current weight, and we will tell you what is realistic and how long it takes.
