Every diabetes supply on one counter, with the coverage checked before you pay

Test strips come from one place, pen needles from another, and the meter came from a prescriber's office. When a box runs low, the guessing starts over: which store carries your brand, whether the strips match your meter, and whether your plan will pay for the quantity you actually use.

All of it sits on one counter here in Delaware, next to the prescriptions themselves. You can see what you are buying, ask what the difference is between two boxes, and leave with the right one the first time.

What gets checked before the claim goes through

Quantity limits

Plans cap how many strips and lancets they will cover in a month, so that cap gets compared to how often you really test before anything is billed.

Approvals

When a plan wants sign off before it will pay for an item, the prior authorization is filed from here and followed until an answer comes back.

Cash price

If what your plan leaves you owing looks high, the cash discount price is run beside it so you can take whichever number is lower.

Meter and technique

Larecia Seibert, PharmD, will look at your meter setup, your lancet depth, and where on the finger you test, because a sore fingertip is usually a settings problem.

Bring these the first time

  • Your insurance card.
  • The meter you use now, or the box it came in.
  • An empty strip or lancet box, so the exact fit is matched.
  • The name of the prescriber who manages your diabetes.
  • A list of anything you buy off the shelf for it.

Call and find out what your plan covers on supplies before the next box runs out.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Many supplies can be bought without one. If you want your insurance to pay, the plan almost always needs a prescription on file naming the strip and how often you test. Give the pharmacist your prescriber name and the request can be sent, then the claim is billed once it comes back.

Yes. Bring the meter or its box so the strips are matched to it, since strips are not interchangeable between meters. If the meter is old or the readings look off, Larecia Seibert, PharmD, will go through the setup with you and check that the strip lot and the device agree.

Durable medical equipment is carried alongside diabetic supplies, and stock moves. Call with the exact item you need before driving over. If it is not on the shelf, the pharmacist can tell you whether it can be ordered, what documentation your plan wants, and what the cash price looks like next to the covered price.

Yes. Home delivery covers supplies the same way it covers prescriptions, and curbside pickup is available if coming inside is difficult. Call ahead so the order is pulled and packed, and say then if you want anything else added, since a second trip out is the thing worth avoiding.

Yes. Medication synchronization lines your refills up so they come due on one date, and supplies can ride along on that same date. It usually takes a cycle or two before every item aligns. After that, one call a month replaces several separate trips for boxes that ran out at different times.
